A couple of the reblog comments of the post I reblogged of the petition have caught my attention. One said, “Some other information: If this was an 18 year old guy dating a 15 year old girl, people would be all for him getting arrested because of their age. I get that this is supposed to be about their homosexuality, but that is clearly NOT why the charges were filed. Unpopular opinion: This is fucking stupid.” And the other was simple “the age difference though…”
I’m not one to comment on reblog comments but they really bothered me. The girl in question, Kaitlyn, just turned 18. From what we know in the post, we don’t know when the other girl’s birthday is. She could be on the cusp of turning 16. We don’t know. The age difference is only 2-3 years. How is that a big gap? Yes, they are in high school but how many times in your high school has a senior dated a freshman? A junior dated a freshman? A senior a sophomore. Did that bother you then? It wouldn’t bother me but to each their own, I suppose.
And that isn’t the reason why the comments bothered me so much. Both are still children. It states that the mother of the 15 year old was fine with the relationship but oh no! Suddenly now the girl had a birthday and she’s suddenly not okay. That doesn’t make sense to me. At all. It’s not as if this was a 25 year old woman dating a 15 year old girl. They are both in school! The same school on the same basketball team but when the coach caught wind of the relationship, nope you can’ be on the team anymore. The parents knew about the age difference from the start. It was not as if it was news that Kaitlyn was a senior about to graduate. What is happening to her is beyond unfair.
If something bothers you so much, if you don’t agree with something, it’s easy to scroll on.
